BROCK McGillis Retired Hockey Player & LGBTQ+ Activist4 EDITOR’S LETTER Dear Readers, As the publisher, I am incredibly proud to introduce our second volume of Out NW magazine. Looking back at 2024, it was an incredible first year for Queer Publishing. We have brought you first-ever interviews, some fantastic celebrities, and topics that are tremendously important to our community. In addition, as a magazine, we have donated over $35,000 worth of advertising space to different charities throughout the region. This magazine was born from a simple yet powerful idea: that betterment is a journey we all embark on and that by sharing our stories, insights, and challenges, we can inspire and uplift each other along the way. Over the past twelve months, we’ve explored the many facets of personal growth, from mindfulness and well-being to creativity, connection, and purpose. We’ve heard from inspiring individuals who are making a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. We’ve learned new skills, challenged our perspectives, and found comfort in knowing we’re not alone. So, this month’s theme is Betterment! It is all about what we can do to better ourselves in 2025. From relationships to our social health, diets, and mental fortitude, we will always focus the first issue of the year on holistically being better, whether as individuals or as a society. It reflects the power of positive thinking, self-care’s importance, and human connection’s beauty. It’s a testament to the fact that anything is possible when we come together with a shared vision for a better future. I’m filled with hope and anticipation as we approach this year. We’ll continue exploring new horizons, delving deeper into the topics that matter the most to you. We’ll continue to amplify the voices of those positively impacting the world. Most importantly, we’ll continue to build this incredible community together. Thank you for being a part of the Out NW family. Thank you for your unwavering support, insightful feedback, and commitment to living your best life. Here’s to many more years of growth, inspiration, and betterment together! Happy New Year! Between navigating microaggressions, advocating for equality, and simply trying to live authentically, it’s no wonder many of us are feeling burnt out and stressed. Finding a passion, hobby, or even just a way to relax and de-stress is crucial for our well-being, a way to reclaim our time and energy and refill our inner reserves. But where do you start? For many, finding that “thing” can feel like searching for a lost earring in a crowded nightclub. The key is to embrace exploration and remember that this journey is about YOU – your joy, your peace, and your unique expression. So, ditch the pressure, slip into something comfy, and dive into the possibilities that can help you find your zen and unleash your inner spark. Mind & Body Harmony: Reclaiming Your Inner Sanctuary Sometimes, the loudest noise is the chaos within our own minds. Finding ways to quiet the internal chatter can be truly transformative. Yoga: A Collage of Movement and Mindfulness: Yoga is more than just stretching; it’s a powerful tool for connecting with your body, calming your mind, and building physical and mental strength. Look for LGBTQ+- friendly studios or online classes that create a safe and inclusive space. Imagine flowing through a sun salutation in a room filled with vibrant energy and acceptance – it’s an experience that can ground you in the present moment and leave you feeling empowered. Check out Queer + Trans Yoga classes offered online and in many cities; they provide safe spaces to learn and grow your practice. Meditation: Finding Stillness in the Storm: Meditation may initially seem daunting, but even a few minutes of quiet reflection can work wonders. There are guided meditations specifically designed for the LGBTQ+ community, addressing issues like self-acceptance, resilience, and navigating difficult emotions. Try apps like Headspace or Calm, or search for LGBTQ+- focused meditations on YouTube. Imagine finding a quiet corner, closing your eyes, and simply breathing, allowing the worries of the day to melt away. Mindful Walking in Nature: Sometimes, the best way to clear your head is to get out of it – literally! Find a local park, a nature trail, or even just a quiet neighborhood street and take a mindful walk. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, and smells around you. Feel the ground beneath your feet and the sun on your skin. This simple act can reconnect you with the natural world and bring a sense of peace and grounding. Creative Expression: Unleashing Your Inner Artist Our community is overflowing with creativity. Why not tap into yours? Creative outlets can be incredibly therapeutic, allowing you to express your emotions, explore your identity, and create something beautiful in the process. Art Therapy: Painting Your Truth: You don’t need to be Picasso to benefit from art therapy. Grab some paints, Finding Your Zen and Unleashing Your Inner Spark Curated by the Editorspencils, clay, or even just a pen and paper, and let your emotions flow onto the canvas. It’s not about creating a masterpiece; it’s about the process of creating itself. Consider joining an LGBTQ+ art group or workshop where you can connect with others and explore your creativity in a supportive environment. There are even queer pottery studios popping up! Crafting: Handmade with Pride: From knitting and crocheting to jewelry making and woodworking, crafting is a fantastic way to de-stress and create something tangible with your own hands. The rhythmic motions of crafting can be incredibly soothing, and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you finish a project is unmatched. Look for LGBTQ+- owned craft stores or online communities where you can find supplies and inspiration. Imagine creating a vibrant Pride- themed quilt or a beautiful piece of jewelry that reflects your unique personality. Music: A Symphony of Self- Discovery: Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just enjoy singing in the shower, music can be a powerful form of self-expression and emotional release. Consider learning to play an instrument, joining an LGBTQ+ choir or band, or simply creating a playlist of songs that make you feel empowered and alive. Music can be a source of joy, solace, and connection. Imagine belting out your favorite anthem with a group of like-minded individuals or losing yourself in the rhythm of a drum circle. Drag: Unleash Your Inner Diva: Drag is more than just entertainment – it’s a powerful form of self-expression, a celebration of individuality, and a way to challenge societal norms. Whether you’re a seasoned queen or just curious about exploring your drag persona, experimenting with makeup, costumes, and performance can be incredibly liberating. Attend a drag show, take a drag makeup workshop, or simply experiment in the privacy of your own home. Writing: Pen Your Story: Journaling, creative writing, or poetry can be an incredible way to process your emotions, explore your identity, and find your voice. It allows for a safe space to explore difficult feelings and experiences without judgment. Join an LGBTQ+ writing group for support and feedback. Community Connection: Finding Your Tribe While finding personal passions is vital, it’s also important to remember the power of community. Join LGBTQ+ Book Clubs or Game Nights: These groups provide a fun, low-pressure way to connect with others who share your interests. Volunteer for LGBTQ+ Organizations: Giving back to your community can be incredibly rewarding and help you connect with like-minded individuals. Ultimately, finding your passion, hobby, or relaxation technique is a personal journey. Be patient with yourself, be open to new experiences, and most importantly, have fun! The LGBTQ+ community is filled with vibrant, creative, and resilient individuals. By embracing self- care and exploring new avenues of self-expression, we can all find ways to thrive, find joy, and live our most authentic lives. So, go forth, explore, and discover the magic within you!Oregon The LGBT Community in Oregon Photo by Ian Sane from pxhere.comNext >
