THE FASHION & BEAUTY ISSUE With Articles Covering Common Threads, Confidence In Personal Style, The 3 R’s of Fashion, Inclusivity in Advertising, Environmentally Friendly Makeup, and much more... MANNY JAY QUEER FASHIONISTA & CELEBRITY STYLIST4 EDITOR’S LETTER Dear Readers, Welcome to Our 2025 Fashion and Beauty Issue. This year, we look beyond natural beauty to explore the work of stylists and the collaboration of a team of experts who transform the natural into a look crafted by a team we call Building Beauty Stylists. Building beauty goes beyond mere appearance; it’s about creating experiences, spaces, and moments that resonate with the human spirit. Whether in architecture or personal development, beauty is nurtured through intention. In design, harmony with the environment and thoughtful materials create timeless, inviting spaces. Similarly, inner beauty grows through self-care, empathy, and positive connections, fostering a sense of community. Fashion styling is about more than outfits—it’s personal expression. A stylist helps individuals tell their story through clothing, boosting confidence while staying in tune with trends. Hair styling blends artistry with technique, transforming not just hair, but how someone feels about themselves. And makeup, beyond aesthetics, is a powerful tool for self-expression, enabling individuals to confidently face the world. We urge you, dear readers, to read cover to cover and reflect on how a team of experts could come together for the individual. Just imagine what a collaborative effort could do in other areas of our community. Ultimately, beauty is an ongoing journey—whether in our surroundings or within ourselves. It’s a process of growth, expression, and connection, creating a richer, more harmonious world. Sincerely, Mike Montgomery Co-Editor of Out NW PS. From ancient cultural motifs to futuristic innovations, the textiles that form our clothing have played a pivotal role in shaping not just what we wear but how we think about style. Today, as we stand at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, brands like Rossario George, Gucci, Stella McCartney, and Adidas are redefining how materials inspire and influence contemporary trends. Fashion, at its core, is storytelling. Every pattern, texture, and fiber tells a tale of its origins. Across the globe, designers are reaching into the depths of cultural history to bring authenticity to their collections. Gucci often draws on its Italian heritage and historical references, blending modernity with tradition in its collections. Stella McCartney incorporates ethical design and cultural motifs into her work, creating pieces that speak to heritage while advocating sustainability. By weaving such stories into their designs, these brands highlight the timeless allure of fashion as a cultural artifact. Modern consumers are no longer satisfied with just looking good; they want to feel good about what they wear. Sustainability has become a defining trend in fashion as a result, and innovative materials are at the forefront of this movement. From plant-based fabrics to recycled textiles, the industry is transforming the way garments are produced. Stella McCartney has been a pioneer in sustainable luxury, integrating organic and recycled fabrics into her collections. Similarly, Rossario George has embraced this ethos by using cruelty-free materials and eco-conscious production processes. Adidas has also made significant strides in sustainability with its Parley line, which uses recycled ocean plastics to create performance wear. These brands exemplify how the marriage of innovation and ethics can reshape the fashion landscape. While cultural inspiration anchors us to our roots, futuristic materials push us toward uncharted possibilities. Advanced textiles are revolutionizing the way we experience fashion, offering innovations that were once confined to the realms of science fiction. From self- cleaning fabrics to temperature- regulating garments, technology is reshaping what’s possible. One of the most exciting advances is the rise of smart textiles, which integrate electronics into clothing. These fabrics can monitor biometric data, adjust insulation levels, or even charge electronic devices. Brands are exploring how to incorporate cutting- edge materials into their designs while maintaining the elegance and functionality their clientele expects. Gucci is also experimenting with high- tech textiles, incorporating AR Creative Threads by Tony Vicente7 (augmented reality) and NFT fashion experiences to merge digital and physical worlds. Another innovation gaining traction is the use of bioengineered fabrics. Stella McCartney has been at the forefront of experimenting with lab-grown leather, showcasing how ethical fashion can be both innovative and luxurious. Rossario George, known for its commitment to sustainable luxury, exclusively uses high- quality polyurethane leather in its collections, ensuring cruelty-free alternatives without compromising on sophistication. As technology continues to evolve, the possibilities for creating groundbreaking materials are expanding, giving brands new ways to push boundaries and stand out in the ever-evolving world. The most compelling trends in fashion often occur at the intersection of nature and innovation. Biomimicry — the design and production of materials inspired by natural processes — is becoming a popular approach. Designers are looking to the natural world for solutions to modern challenges, creating garments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional. Rossario George’s “Honey” collection exemplifies this fusion. Inspired by the industrious bee, it features intricate honeycomb patterns and metallic gold tones, symbolizing resilience and community. Adidas’s Parley sneakers demonstrate biomimicry in action, with designs inspired by marine ecosystems and constructed from reclaimed ocean waste. By celebrating nature while embracing modern design techniques, these brands create pieces that resonate with contemporary audiences. As globalization brings the world closer, fashion is becoming a universal language. Designers are drawing inspiration from diverse cultures, blending traditional motifs with modern aesthetics to create pieces that appeal to a global audience. However, cultural appreciation must be handled with care to avoid appropriation. This approach aligns with the growing consumer preference for brands that are socially conscious and culturally respectful. Looking ahead, the materials that shape fashion will continue to evolve in response to societal, environmental, and technological shifts. Sustainability will remain a cornerstone, with innovations like biodegradable fabrics and carbon-negative textiles leading the way. At the same time, advancements in AI and 3D printing will offer new ways to design and produce garments, reducing waste and increasing customization. From cultural heritage to cutting- edge technology, the materials that build our outfits are more than just fabrics — they reflect who we are and where we are headed. Brands hold a key role in the continuing story of fashion and mankind’s evolution, proving that fashion is about not just clothing but innovation, sustainability, and storytelling. As the industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the textiles of tomorrow will not only shape trends but also define the way we experience and express ourselves for years to come.Oregon The LGBT Community in Oregon Photo by Jeremy Piehler from FlickrNext >
